Off Season by Jack Ketchum (Book Review)

Image
Off Season by Jack Ketchum My rating: 5 of 5 stars Off Season is brutal, horrific, thrilling, and gut-wrenching. It is no secret that Jack Ketchum made horror novels for people who enjoy great writing, and for people that love horror movies. Even though I was reading some pretty gnarly death scenes and vivid details about people being cannibalized, I just couldn't stop reading. It's one of those stories in which you just have to know what happens next no matter how intense and crazy it may be. Off Season is about an editor from New York who decides to do some editing and vacationing in a remote cabin during offseason in Dead River, where she will be joined by her sister and her friends. A nearby family of animalistic cannibals who live nearby have new game to hunt. Jack Ketchum was a writer who pulled you in for a story and kept you wanting more; the edge of your set, ears perked up, distractions non-existent, and imagination running wild with the shock and horrible thing...

The Curse of La Llorona (Movie Review)

Image
The Curse of La Llorona (2019) 🎃🎃🎃🎃 /5 Directed by Michael Chaves Produced by James Wan, Gary Dauberman, Emile Gladstone Starring Linda Cardellini, Raymond Cruz, Patricia Velasquez, and Marisol Ramirez The Curse of La Llorona is a great addition to the Conjuring Universe (even though it wasn't even promoted as being part of it). It is certainly better than The Nun , and it is extremely creepy. It is awesome to finally see this Mexican folktale come alive on the big screen. Although a lot of people were dissatisfied with the lead actor not being a Latina (Linda Cardellini plays the lead role of a widow of a Hispanic police officer), I thought the movie represented a portion of the Mexican culture and people well as far as traditions and beliefs go. I saw a lot of Latin people in this movie and that was awesome to see as it was when I first watched Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones . La Llorona is definitely scary and has a solid plot with twists and turns. The...

The War Ghouls: And Other Short Stories by Patrick Tillett (Book Review)

Image
The War Ghouls: And Other Short Stories by Patrick Tillett My rating: 4 of 5 stars Patrick Tillett is an exceptional writer with a great taste and cadence as he delivers macabre tales in this book of short stories. My favorite story is "The War Ghouls." All the stories in this book are original, but this one was very different than anything I have ever read and I really enjoyed it. Tillett describes the ghouls mentioned in the story with such detail that I clearly imagine these scary beings. If you're a fan of H.P. Lovecraft and Edgar Allan Poe, you will definitely enjoy The War Ghouls: And Other Stories by Patrick Tillett. View all my reviews

The Girl Next Door by Jack Ketchum (Book Review)

Image
The Girl Next Door by Jack Ketchum My rating: 5 of 5 stars I have heard many things about this book. I glanced here and there at reviews on Goodreads; I looked on Amazon; I saw posts about it on Instagram. Before I read the book I even went and learned about the true crime Jack Ketchum got the inspiration from to write The Girl Next Door. Reading this book, especially in the beginning, was like a beautiful sunny day, but soon, those dark thunderclouds approaching far in the distance are going to bring one hell of a storm. The Girl Next Door is about a young boy named David who befriends the girl next door--Meg--who is staying at his friends' house along with her young and disabled sister, Susan. The two girls are left with their aunt and her two boys after their parents were killed in a car accident. Soon, their aunt begins to abuse the girls along with her children, targeting the older sister, Meg. This novel is horrible and sad, plainly said. And even though the events ...

Tethered by Bryce Gibson (Book Review)

Image
Tethered: County Line Horror #4 by Bryce Gibson My rating: 4 of 5 stars "People say tethered dogs can change--they become mean over time--and I wonder if the same thing happened to us." Tethered by Bryce Gibson is the fourth book in the County Line Horror series which is like the YA novels R.L. Stine and Christopher Pike used to put out under the Point Horror series. But what I enjoy about the County Line Horror series is that it is set in the country and the characters are real. Tethered is about a nineteen-year-old guy named Aiken Pine who returns home because his sister has stabbed the head cheerleader at her school. Some people say that bullying was the underlying cause, so Aiken begins to dig into the mystery surrounding the incident. And as he does so, there are a lot more secrets and dangerous things lurking in the woods. Dogs become dangerous when they become tethered for so long. Aiken left, but there are a few people he knows that have stayed back home, b...

Unfriended: Dark Web (Movie Review)

Image
Unfriended: Dark Web Directed by Stephen Susco Starring Colin Woodell, Rebecca Rittenhouse, Betty Gabriel, Andrew Lees, Connor del Rio, Stephan Nogueras, Savira Windyani Produced by Timur Bekmambetov and Jason Blum Unfriended: Dark Web is a perfect example of a movie that should have not been rated PG-13 to get teens running to the theater without adult supervision. Wait--it's Rated R? Yes. The movie is Rated R. After watching the movie it certainly does not seem like it. To me, it looked very PG-13 considering they didn't show a lot of gore, kills, or anything like that. I don't believe it's because I'm desensitized to horror violence, I think it is because the director did not utilize that R rating to its full potential. If you're going to get the R stamp you might as well go balls to the wall. And if you're going to make a movie about the Dark Web it should certainly be very dark. Unfriended: Dark Web is about a guy named Matias (Colin Woodell...

'Terrified' (A Shudder Original) Movie Review

Image
Terrified (2017) 🎃 🎃🎃🎃/5 Directed by Demián Rugna Stars: Maximiliano Ghione ,  Norberto Gonzalo ,  Elvira Onetto As I was falling in the black hole that is YouTube, I had stumbled upon a very creepy movie trailer for a Spanish movie called Aterrados . I really wanted to watch it but I didn’t know where to find it. So times goes by, I finally subscribe to Shudder, and wah-la! Atterados is there, but now it is called Terrified --a Shudder original. After watching the movie, that’s just what Terrified is: terrifying. After strange occurrences (and death) happen back to back in a neighborhood in Buenos Aires, a doctor specializing in the paranormal, her colleague, and an ex-police officer investigate further. What they find is terrifying. The movie has plenty of WTF moments. The WTF moments were definitely the reanimated corpses and monsters (some entities) that we see in the film. It isn’t a zombie film, but some bodies come back to life becau...

An Excerpt of 'House of Souls' by E. Reyes from Devil's Hill: An Anthology

Image
An Excerpt from "House of Souls" from Devil's Hill: An Anthology by E. Reyes The Kilbourne House stood vacant and occupied with the very same furniture purchased by the owners who left the place around 1991. The home was on the north side of Devil’s Hill, deep in the pines. Not much was known about the home except for an infamous triple suicide; the way the previous, and last tenants, departed. A group of rap artists who called themselves “Devil’s Hill” had rented the place to record a new album. Devil’s Hill consisted of three men in their mid-twenties by the names of Michael, Rex, and Don. They weren’t your basic rap group who made your basic rap music. Devil’s Hill made horrorcore/alternative/rock music. Their lyrics depicted topics such as death, killing, serial killer homage, Satanism, anti-Christianity themes, dark humor, and depression. The music on their last two albums were described as Eminem and Cage meet the black metal scene in Norway at a horr...

I Read 'In The Tall Grass' by Stephen King and Joe Hill

Image
In The Tall Grass By Stephen King & Joe Hill ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5 Finally got around to reading 'In The Tall Grass' by Stephen King and Joe Hill on Play Books and I really enjoyed it. The story is about a brother and sister who are traveling together to San Diego when they hear cries for help coming from within the tall grass on the side of the road. This story is unsettling, weird, and not for the squeamish or the easily offended. There is a certain scene that is very gory and just awful. The only con? I wanted the story to be longer. I can't wait to see the adaption of this short story!

(Spoilers!) Pet Sematary (2019) Movie Review

Image
Pet Sematary (2019) ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐/5 Contains Major Spoilers Before watching  Pet Sematary , I was thrilled and excited that they (Paramount) were finally making a new adaption of  Stephen King's  scariest novel. Although the 1989 film is praised by horror fans, it was time to retell the story. The new  Pet Sematary  film definitely leaves the campy vibes the first adaption contained on the chopping block, and amplify the gore and the horror. Pet Sematary , directed by  Dennis Widmyer  and  Kevin Kolsch  ( Starry Eyes ) is about a Doctor named Louis Creed ( Jason Clarke ) who moves his family from the busy and loud life in Boston to a more obscured and timid paced, quiet town of Ludlow, Maine. After a tragedy strikes to Ellie Creed's ( Jete Laurence ) cat Church, neighbor Jud Crandall ( John Lithgow ) tells Louis about an ancient burial beyond what the local kids call Pet Sematary. The ground believed to be cursed by a Wendigo rea...
