Annihilation (Movie Review)

Image
Annihilation (2018) ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5 Written & Directed by Alex Garland Based on the novel of the same name By Jeff VanderMeer Starring Natalie Portman, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Tessa Thompson, & Gina Rodriguez Annihilation is about a group of military scientists who set out to uncover the mystery of something that crash landed into a lighthouse, causing a shimmer that seems to keep growing as it mutates the surrounding landscape and transforms different species. I didn't watch numerous trailers or clips of Annihilation , so all I knew was that a group of women were going to enter a quarantined land that foreshadowed something dangerous. I was blown away after watching it. Annihilation is a perfect mix of sci-fi, horror, and drama. It deals with self-destruction -- Natalie Portman's character is depressed, there is a cutter, and another person who is pretty much on a suicide mission, not really caring for her safety. It blends all of these scientific, horrifi...

The Haunting of Henderson Close (Book Review)

The Haunting of Henderson Close  ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5 Catherine Cavendish Flame Tree Press The Haunting of Henderson Close is about a haunted tourist attraction – Henderson Close – which is the site of the murder of Miss Carmichael. When renovations begin, ghostly occurrences being to heighten in activity. Soon, Hannah, our main character, must discover who it was exactly who murdered Miss Carmichael. But something sinister and evil lurks in the shadows of Henderson Close. This is my first time reading a book by Catherine Cavendish and I’m glad I’ve done so. Cavendish writes with a mysterious, ominous, elegant voice which easily transcends into the surprising and dreadful elements of the occult and paranormal. The Haunting of Henderson Close is a fantastic ghost story with some gore pop-ups and haunting scares. The story takes many twists and turns, leaving predictability obscure. The only problem I had with the story was that everything seemed to be rushed toward the end. I felt ...

Richard Chizmar - The Long Way Home (Book Review)

Image
The Long Way Home Richard Chizmar ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐/5 PS Publishing It has been a long time since I devoured a book. I read Richard Chizmar's The Long Way Home in three days – 3! The last time I read a Chizmar book was the Stephen King collaborated and seamlessly written Gwendy's Button Box – which I also devoured and loved – so it was great to read something new from the man. Let me tell you, The Long Way Home is a great body of horror and literature in general. Every story in The Long Way Home had me by the horns. I was devoted to the stories and I had to know what was really going on. All of this was executed without a cheap trick or gimmick to hold your attention. And the stories that Chizmar collaborated with others on are also seamless. Some of the stories are heart-warming and charming (My Father and Ellery Queen’s Mystery Magazine, Stephen King at 70: A Tribute to the Gunslinger, The Long Way Home) and some are chilling and keep you thinking (Widow’s Point, Misch...

Split (Movie Review)

Image
Split (2016) ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐/5 Written & Directed by M. Night Shyamalan Starring James McAvoy, Anya Taylor-Joy, & Betty Buckley Ever since M. Night Shyamalan scared the hell out of a twelve-year-old me with The Sixth Sense, I have always been a fan of his movies (although I've never watched The Last Airbender or After Earth ). When Shyamalan came back with the Blumhouse produced movie The Last Visit (which I enjoyed) I was happy to see that a new movie called Split was coming soon. The movie Split is about a man suffering from DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder) and has 23 different personalities. He imprisons three teenage girls in an isolated facility. Split is a psychological horror masterpiece that leads with strong acting, a great story, and a great set-up for 2018's Glass starring Bruce Willis, Samuel L. Jackson, and James McAvoy. I easily gave this movie 5 stars out of 5 because it is that good. James McAvoy delivers, arguably, his best actin...

Work Diaries #1

Image
On my way to work as a cashier (yay me), I decided to stop at the pharmacy inside of the grocery store to pick up my meds. I thought to myself, I haven’t been feeling so grand, lately, so maybe I should pick up my happy pills (anxiety meds).  As soon as I walk inside, the line is literally in front of me. I checked my phone – oh, cool! Ten minutes. Maybe I can do this. But with every person that goes up to get their meds, they ask for the pharmacist. Dude, why does the pharmacist have to tell you how to apply cream to your ass? I start getting anxiety. The sluggish line moves little by little full of people who need a pharmacist to tell them how to take and use simple meds. Right when I’m third in line – I need to leave; it is one minute until work starts for me. I reluctantly walk out of line and make way for work, blasting my headphones to get rid of my anxiety that I needed my meds for but got more anxiety for waiting for my meds. As soon as I clock in, the line rese...

Aquaman (Movie Review)

Image
Aquaman (2018) ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ of 5 Directed by James Wan Story by Geoff Johns, James Wan, and Will Beall Starring Jason Momoa, Amber Heard, Patrick Wilson, & Willem Dafoe. When I saw who was playing Aquaman in a quick cameo in Zack Snyder's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice , I was intrigued. Jason Momoa, based off looks alone, is much more badass looking than the actual Aquaman comics character. Once I really saw Aquaman in action in Snyder's/Whedon's (more Whedon's) Justice League , I wanted a solo Aquaman movie. I mean, come on, he was riding on the Batmobile with his trident and he sky-surfed a parademon! Aquaman is one of the best superhero movies ever made. Director James Wan is a phenomenal director, the cast is perfect, the effects are great, and the story is superb. In Aquaman , King Orm (Patrick Wilson) rules the now sunken Atlantis. With help from his army, King Orm wants to conquer the oceanic kingdoms, and eventually, the surface -- submerg...
